In short: The Aloaha ZUGFeRD GUI is a Windows application to create, read, edit and sign ZUGFeRD, Factur-X and XRechnung e-invoices without programming. You enter the invoice data in forms, save it as EN 16931 XML, embed the XML into a PDF/A-3 and sign the finished ZUGFeRD invoice – with a local certificate or with the CodeB remote signing service (PAdES). The GUI is built entirely on the Aloaha ZUGFeRD SDK. Price: EUR 199 excl. VAT.

Features
- Create e-invoices: enter invoice data, addresses, bank details and line items and save them as ZUGFeRD / XRechnung XML.
- Read e-invoices: open ZUGFeRD PDF, Factur-X PDF, XRechnung (CII) and UBL invoices; the data appears in the forms and can be changed.
- Convert UBL: import UBL invoices and save them as XRechnung (CII) or ZUGFeRD PDF/A.
- Embed XML into PDF: merge an existing PDF/A with the invoice XML into a hybrid ZUGFeRD invoice (PDF/A-3).
- PDF from a Word template: create a ZUGFeRD PDF/A directly from the XML and a DOCX template.
- Signing (new in 11.0.0.2): digitally sign finished ZUGFeRD PDFs – locally with a certificate or with CodeB remote signing (PAdES B-B to B-LTA).
- Bilingual: English or German user interface, switchable in the status bar.
- Portable or installed: runs without installation or from a Windows installer.
The tabs
Create XML
Four sub-tabs: Basic Information (invoice ID, invoice date, document type such as invoice 380, credit note 381, corrected invoice 384 or final construction invoice 877, delivery date, payment reference, currency, payment type, notes, VAT rate, VAT category with exemption reason and the totals), Postal Addresses and Bank Details of seller and buyer, and Items (quantity, unit, name, description, net price). Load XML or PDF opens an existing e-invoice, Save XML saves the result.
Convert XML to PDF/A
Creates a finished ZUGFeRD PDF/A-3 from a ZUGFeRD XML and a DOCX template, optionally with an additional attached file. With Digitally Sign PDF the result is signed right away using the signature settings. Requires Microsoft Word.
Merge XML into PDF
Embeds an invoice XML into an existing PDF/A and saves it as a hybrid ZUGFeRD invoice – the layout of your current invoicing software stays as it is.
Sign PDF (new)
Signs a finished ZUGFeRD, Factur-X or XRechnung PDF. Choose the file (drag & drop works too); the GUI checks whether an invoice XML is embedded and whether the PDF is already signed, and suggests <name>_signed.pdf as the target. Sign PDF signs with the configured method; the embedded XML stays unchanged. With remote signing the GUI shows the signature level that was actually produced.
Signature settings
Settings > Signature settings defines how the GUI signs. The same settings are used by the Aloaha ZUGFeRD PDF Viewer (per Windows user).
| Setting | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Local certificate | Signs with a certificate from the Windows certificate store or a smart card. Pick the serial number with Choose…; if empty, the certificate is chosen when signing. Optional RFC 3161 time stamp server. |
| CodeB remote signing | Signs via the CodeB Remote Signature Service (part of the CodeB EUID Wallet software, now also used for ZUGFeRD) – no local certificate; a progress window shows that the signature is running. The minimum level defines the lowest level the service must deliver – otherwise nothing is signed. URL of your production CodeB server, user name, password and PAdES level B-B, B-T, B-LT or B-LTA. |
| Test server | https://phone.codeb.io is only the CodeB test server – fine for trying it out, not for production environments. The GUI warns when it is entered. |
| Save password | Optional; the password is stored encrypted with Windows DPAPI for the logged-on user. Otherwise it is kept only until the program is closed. |
| Test connection | Lets the service sign a small test PDF and reports success and the level delivered – nothing is saved. |
| Reason, location, contact | Optional details written into the signature. |

Everything the GUI does is also available as an API of the Aloaha ZUGFeRD SDK for .NET and COM. SDK customers can request the GUI sources. Questions? Write to info@aloaha.com.
Frequently asked questions
Can I create an XRechnung or ZUGFeRD invoice without programming?
Yes. Enter the invoice data in the forms of the Aloaha ZUGFeRD GUI and save it as EN 16931 XML; the GUI is based on the Aloaha ZUGFeRD SDK.
How do I sign a finished ZUGFeRD invoice?
Open the "Sign PDF" tab, choose the finished ZUGFeRD PDF and click "Sign PDF". The method comes from Settings > Signature settings: local certificate or CodeB remote signing (PAdES). The embedded XML is not changed.
Do I need my own certificate?
Not for CodeB remote signing – a user name and password for the CodeB Remote Signature Service are enough. Local signing needs a certificate with private key in the Windows certificate store or on a smart card.
