ZUGFeRD is a hybrid format for electronic invoices. It combines a human-readable PDF/A-3 file with embedded, machine-readable XML invoice data compliant with the EN 16931 standard. The same file can be visually checked and fully automatically processed at once.

XRechnung is a pure XML format used mainly for invoicing to public authorities (B2G). ZUGFeRD is a hybrid format that also embeds the XML in a visible PDF, making it ideal for B2B. Both comply with EN 16931. ZUGFeRD Pro creates and processes both formats.

Since 1 January 2025, every domestic B2B company must be able to receive structured e-invoices. From 1 January 2027 the sending obligation applies to companies with more than €800,000 prior-year turnover, and from 1 January 2028 to all. Plain PDF or paper invoices do not fulfil the obligation.

ZUGFeRD Pro supports the current ZUGFeRD version 2.5.2 (based on UN/CEFACT CII D22B) and is backward compatible with older 2.x versions. It covers the invoice-relevant profiles EN 16931 (COMFORT), EXTENDED and the XRECHNUNG profile — exactly the profiles that count as a full invoice under the law.

No. ZUGFeRD Pro runs entirely on-premise in your own environment and is air-gap capable. No invoice data is transmitted to external servers, there is no cloud lock-in and no telemetry. Your business data stays under your control at all times.

The SDK targets .NET (C# and VB.NET) and additionally offers a COM interface for VB6 and other legacy applications. Command-line tools are available for automation, and an ASP.NET web-service handler for portals and workflows. This lets you integrate ZUGFeRD Pro into virtually any Windows and server environment.

Yes. Using a DOCX template, ZUGFeRD Pro renders a complete, visible PDF/A-3 from the XML data — an XRechnung, say. No existing PDF is required. Alternatively, you can embed the XML into an existing PDF/A-3.

Yes. Factur-X is the French counterpart to ZUGFeRD and uses the same hybrid format of PDF/A-3 with embedded XML. ZUGFeRD Pro creates and reads Factur-X just like ZUGFeRD and XRechnung.

The optional maintenance contract costs 20% of the license sum per year and includes free updates to new major versions. It always covers all licenses in use together — not only some runtime licenses or only the SDK — and cannot be concluded retroactively. Because the ZUGFeRD / e-invoicing standard changes frequently, we recommend the maintenance contract so your integration stays compliant over time.

Yes. Besides the embedded invoice XML, you can embed one or more companion documents as real file attachments in the same PDF/A-3 — not as Base64 inside the XML, but as separate attachments retrievable from the reader's attachment panel. Important: do not append the companion file to the finished ZUGFeRD PDF afterwards — that breaks the PDF/A and XMP metadata and therefore validation. Add it in the same step that embeds the XML. In the MergeXMLIntoPDF function you pass the AdditionalFile parameter; for several files set the Files2Attach property first. The result stays valid ZUGFeRD / XRechnung.

The SDK licence is per developer workstation and already includes a runtime licence for 10 end users — you use it to build your integration. For each further end customer (client, organisation or branch) running your solution in production you need one runtime / end-user licence, each covering 10 workplaces. The optional maintenance contract (20% of the licence sum per year) is always concluded for all deployed licences together.
